Authentic Delicatessen Taste Courtesy of Kornblatts Deli

Nothing beats a great sandwich. You know what I’m talking about; savory meats and creamy cheeses stacked between slices of fresh baked bread just like Grandma used to make. It’s what a classic delicatessen is known for and it’s why Portlanders love Nob Hill’s Kornblatts Deli.

All the best sandwich fixins tempt you from a row of glass cases as soon as you walk through the doors of Kornblatts. Cured meats and bins of bagels give you endless choices, from traditional deli favorites like lox and cream cheese, or try a smoky Kippered Salmon Bagel ($13.95), featuring fresh Pacific Northwest caught salmon.

Kornblatts Deli also offers a great lunch menu and recently a friend and I stopped in for a bite. Deciding on a deli classic, she ordered a Hot Pastrami Sandwich ($11.95) on toasted bread, with a cup of macaroni salad on the side. The rye bread was crunchy and golden, with flavorful meat and enough melted cheese to hold the whole sandwich together.

For my meal I decided on Kornblatts’s offering to the Portland food scene, the Pastrami, Corned Beef, and Swiss Sloppy Joe ($11.95). The “sloppy” in the sandwich is a cool layer of freshly made coleslaw, which is a perfect companion to the salty meat combo and tangy slices of Swiss.

When a restaurant claims their food to be as “rich and delicious as grandmother’s” that’s a very high level of love to obtain, but Kornblatts does it, with fresh ingredients, savory meats, and a heaping helping of the kind of love only a grandma can whip up.

Kornblatts Deli is located in the Northwest neighborhood of Nob Hill on historic 23rdAvenue. Their website offers a glossary to help you familiarize yourself with the traditional Jewish menu before you go.
