For most travelers, vacation begins the minute you grab your bags off the conveyer belt and head out of the airport at your final destination. At Portland International Airport (PDX), where the terminal is filled with culinary, shopping and entertainment experiences, you might just want to start your vacation right after you leave the ticket counter.
Travel & Leisure magazine names PDX the nation’s best airport four years running, and it’s easy to understand why. It’s a well-planned, relatively quiet terminal with wide walkways, numerous art installations and the much-loved green carpeting with the PDX runway pattern. Now several new additions to PDX airport has surely secured that number one ranking for many years to come.
From high-end eateries, to fast food made with fresh local ingredients, our city’s foodie reputation is ready to greet incoming visitors, from a delicacy from Petite Provence, to a Blazing California Roll from Hissho Sushia or a tasty burger from PDX Burgerville.
Show up hungry because there are twenty-nine amazing Portland restaurants lining the terminal and every one of them will make you want to risk missing your flight. Taverns, and breweries, coffee shops and donut shops, delis and diners await your arrival!
The best of the best of Oregon shopping is available at the airport, too, and provided me a chance to pick up the last few essential items that didn’t make it into my bag at home.
World famous brands like Powells Books, Timberline, Pendelton, Columbia Sportswear, Nike, as well as the Oregonian and Your NW Travel Mart are just a few of the stores you’ll be able to shop while you wait for your departure time.

One of the most celebrated additions to PDX is Hollywood Theater. The airport’s free, 17-seat cinema is a sister to Portland’s historic 1926 theater located on Sandy Blvd. Short films by Oregon filmmakers are shown throughout the day. No presentation lasts longer than 10-minutes and all are appropriate for general audiences, so everyone can enjoy this extra special treat when they find their flight is delayed.
Don’t forget to stop by the Travel Oregon visitors center as you head out the door. It’s conveniently located downstairs in the Baggage Claim area and is manned by knowledgeable, helpful people who want to help you experience all the great places you’ll find in Oregon.
Portland International Airport is not only a destination for travelers; it’s an oasis in the crazy world of air travel. Make sure you’ve scheduled enough time in your travels to explore America’s favorite airport!
